The history of the Hospital can be retraced to 1892 when the cheuch missions from Canada, the Great Britain and the United States set up Renji Hospital and Cunren Hospital respectively. In 1914 the School of Medicine in West China Union University was founded and both Renji and Cunren Hospitals became the teaching hospitals. In 1937 when Anti-Japanese war broke up, both hospitals were reconstituted to be the West China, Central and Cheloo tri-university Union Hospital and then moved to the current address.
