   Introducton

    West China Hospital of Sichuan University has become a comprehensive research hospital with diverse disciplines, abundant faculty resources, advanced medical technology, modern medical equipment, and strong potential in medical research. The strategic orientation of West China Hospital is to become a national base for medical scientific research and technology innovation. West China Hospital is the university’s largest research faculty and hospital, with many national-class resesrchers working across a range of disciplines, from laboratory-based medical science to applied clinical research.   
    Nation Key Disciplines in the hospital have contributed to advances in many areas including in oncology, transplantation engineer and immunology, tissue engineer, cardiovascular and lung physiology, orthopaedics, liver transplantation, gastroenterology, radiology, psychology, anesthesiology, drug discovery, and neurosciences.

    West China Hospital takes pride in its faculty members, including 537 medical specialists serving the hospital, 1 academician of China Academy of Science, 5 professors on the “Yangzi River Awards Plan”, 12 winners of the “National fund of Natural Science for Outstanding Young Scientists”, 1 “Innovative Research Group” of national natural science, and 1 “Technology Innovation Group” for the Ministry of Education of the People’s Rebublic of China (MOE). Now the hospital has 9 key disciplines of MOE, 3 disciplines with the national “211” Project.

    There are 1 national and MOE key laboratory for biotherapy for human diseases, 1 MOH key laboratory for transplant engineering and immunology, and 25 provincial-level key laboratory centers. Furthermore, the Chinese Evidence-Based Medicine Center, MOE Virtual Research Center of Evidence-Based Medicine, National Safety Assessment Center for New Drugs and Traditional Chinese Medicine (GLP Center), and National Base for Drug Clinical Trials (GCP Center for Western Medicine & Traditional Chinese Medicine) are all based in the hospital.
    In the past five years, the hospital has received close to 600 million Yuan of research funding. It has won 700 prizes of major scientific projects, such as the National “973”, “863” “Tenth Five-year Plan”, “Eleventh Five-year Plan” and National Fund of Natural Science for Outstanding Young Scientists.
    WCH has excelled among all medical institutes nationally in the number of research paper published, and ranked first in the number of SCI and MEDILINE-indexed thesis in 2007. Academician Wei Yu-quan had one scientific paper published on Nature Medicine, Professor Qiu Xiao-qing published two papers on Nature Biotechnology, and Professor Liu Ming recently published an article on Lancet Neurology. Currently, the hospital publishes 9 different academic periodicals, all of which are included in the resource periodicals for national scientific publications. Chinese Journal of Reparative and Reconstructive Surgery and Journal of Biomedical Engineering are both indexed by the MEDLINE database.
